Wagging its tail, a puppy stood on the rails at a busy railway station. People were worried when the dog didn’t move. He was looking at something under a bench. Someone called the police because they were worried about the puppy. As the officers approached the puppy, they became alarmed. He wouldn’t move. They turned pale when they found out why.
When the police got the puppy off the railway tracks, it wanted to go back on.
They’d never seen a young animal so determined. But the trains were running again, so they couldn’t let it happen.
But someone at the station wanted to find out why the puppy was so determined to jump back on the tracks.
She ordered all the trains to stop! Someone called the two nearest train conductors and the local headquarters to say they shouldn’t enter the station because they needed to send someone on the rails to get something off it.
They could only enter the tracks once they got the go-ahead.
The puppy was stuck in a small gap between the track and the gravel. It was breathing quickly, showing it had been there long.
The puppy had not been touched or cared for in days.
It had rained that morning, and the poor creature was soaked.
It was unwell and made soft whines.
The police had to act fast to save the animal.
It took about 5 minutes to decide that trains would avoid the station.
While waiting for the police, staff ensured some trains passed safely.
The police were serious.
When they arrived, most passengers were happy.
They caught the puppy in one of their nets. The animal struggled and cried, but it didn’t help.
The officer took the net off the tracks and put the puppy in the cage.
The puppy thrashes against the cage door. They walk towards the railway tracks.
The puppy’s claws scraped against the metal, and its body pushed with surprising strength as if it knew its freedom was at stake. People admired the puppy’s determination but also felt sorry for it.
The puppy’s resistance was a silent plea for kindness and freedom, and it left an impression on everyone who saw it.
The police offered to take the puppy to a shelter, but the shopkeeper said she would take care of it.
The police agreed because it was easier for Lilly.
When Lilly opened the can of dog food, the puppy’s ears perked up.
The puppy had been living on the street for a while. It was not underweight but needed food.
Lilly liked this animal. It didn’t deserve its life; she could help it live better.
Lilly always remembered her original hopes for her puppy.
It still needed to show her why it kept returning to the track. That evening, she would get her chance. She sat on a bench by the train tracks. The dog tried to escape the cage. As the train left, the station lights went out.
Lily took a deep breath and opened the cage door.
The puppy ran towards the train tracks and jumped on. Lily ran after the animal.
She saw him still sniffing around the track. He was looking for something he found earlier.
Lily watched the puppy closely as it found the source of the scent. Then something happened.
Lily knew the puppy had found what it was looking for when it sat by one of the tracks.
They climbed the train tracks and approached the puppy.
She thought they had bonded, but the animal snarled at her as she walked towards it.
She kept going, and it stopped roaring. The dog wasn’t attacking or barking at her.
The dog was trying to return to the tracks to protect a kitten from the trains.
This tiny creature is just a few weeks old. Lily knew she had to help.
She picked up the kitten and put it in her pocket. Its weak sounds showed that it was in pain.
Lily’s hands were shaking as she went into the vet’s office. She had to decide whether to help them. The vet said the kitten was dehydrated and weak and needed help.
The vet said the kitten had a broken leg and was malnourished.
Lily took a deep breath of relief. Instinct.
She had thought about what to do for a few days and had decided.
She planned to adopt both the puppy and the cat. She’d never considered getting a pet, but it seemed like fate. The three are happy together.
