Since her father took office in 2009, Sasha Obama has been known almost exclusively as the daughter of the president. Growing up in plain sight of everyone but also under heavy protection, it’s safe to say that Sasha’s childhood was far from ordinary. Still, over the years, the famous daughter had a few moments that helped teens relate to her.

1. Sasha is not her real name

We first met Sasha Obama during her father’s run for the White House. After he won the election, 7-year-old Sasha was immediately on everyone’s radar. Did you know that Sasha is not her real name?

As it turns out, Sasha is short for Natasha. This came to light in 2016 when news outlets reported that she was using her full name for her summer job on Martha’s Vineyard. That was until Twitter user Ashley K. Ford shared the news in 2017 (via Refinery29), sending Twitter into a frenzy.

2. Can Sasha Obama take your order?

Just because you’re the president’s daughter doesn’t necessarily get you special treatment – at least not if you’re Obama. Like many teens finishing up the school year and entering the summer with tons of free Time, Sasha Obama found herself a summer job.

As the Boston Herald later reported, the then 15-year-old Sasha Obama worked in a restaurant during the summer months of that year, accompanied by Secret Service agents.

3. Sasha Obama has the best room in the Obama household

Having a baby in the family has certain advantages, especially when the parents are involved in decorating and designing the new home. Once the Obama family left the White House, it was Time to look for a new house to call home.

Michelle Obama talked about their move in an interview with Ellen. In her opinion, who got the best deal? ” Sasha lives in this house. She has a two-bedroom suite; it’s all finished. She has a living room and a bedroom.”

4. Sasha Obama is on social media …. somewhere

You may not soon find Sasha Obama’s Instagram account, but she still uses social media. As The Hill reports, her father confirmed this at a Hillary Clinton rally 2017. During his speech, he mentioned that Sasha tweets.

There is also hard evidence that Sasha uses Snapchat, according to President Obama’s interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” where he described how she taught him how to use the popular app. He recalls, “Sasha gave me instructions on Snapchat.”

5. Sasha Obama officially became a high school graduate

On June 9, 2019, Sasha Obama reached a significant milestone: According to a Us Weekly article, she graduated from high school. This marked the end of her four years at the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., where other presidential children such as Chelsea Clinton, Al Gore III, and the Nixon girls were educated (according to Time).

Sasha wore a white dress at the ceremony and was accompanied by her mother, father, and sister, who attended the momentous occasion.

6. Sasha Obama attended the University of Michigan

Regarding college, Sasha Obama went against the family trend of attending Ivy League schools like Yale or Harvard. According to The Detroit News, Sasha instead chose to participate in the University of Michigan, which is a Big Ten public university. Thus, Sasha became a “Wolverine” and called Ann Arbor her new home away from home.

7. Sasha lives with her sister Malia in Los Angeles

As of 2022, Sasha Obama has transferred from the University of Michigan to UCLA. According to Sasha’s mother, Michelle Obama, during an appearance on NBC News (via Page Six), Sasha has moved in with her older sister Malia in Los Angeles. “She was going to invite them over for dinner, and they said, ‘Why don’t you come over for cocktails?’ So we thought, ‘Okay, let’s see what happens,'” Michelle says. “The martinis were a little weak. I don’t think they knew what it was.”

As Michelle says, the two young women became “best friends.” ” What I love most is that these two girls are each other’s best friends,” she said, adding that in Los Angeles, they found themselves “in a place where they’re each other’s support system, where they have each other’s backs – that’s what a mother would want.”
