Mila Kunis has come a long way since her involvement in the teen sitcom “That ’70s Show,” earning high praise for her roles in films such as “Black Swan,” “Bad Moms,” and “The Luckiest Girl Alive,” among others. Over the years, she has stayed in good standing with the public, and her infectious charisma and charity work have made her a fan favorite. But as we have seen many times in Hollywood, fame, and fortune do not give anyone immunity from life’s tragedies and hardships.
Ukrainian immigrant Kunis, who began her acting career at 9 with a role in a Barbie commercial, was no exception, facing her share of hardships.
Born to Jewish parents in Ukraine, Mila Kunis and her family moved to Los Angeles when she was seven years old, driven by the pursuit of the American dream and the hope for a bright future.
Soon after arriving in the U.S., Mila Kunis went to second grade without knowing English. As you can imagine, it took a lot of work.
Fortunately for Kunis, she was able to find her footing in her first year of school. Her language skills improved, and she quickly found a talent manager. It wasn’t long before she appeared in commercials and eventually on “That 70’s Show,” which she got into at age 14. Those problematic early years have become a distant childhood memory, and it has become apparent how far the star has come since arriving in the U.S. without knowing English.
Today, Kunis is known as one of Tinseltown’s most attractive stars, and publications such as Esquire, FHM, and The Sun have named her the sexiest woman in the world at various times.
Before she got together with Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis was in a relationship with Home Alone actor Macaulay Culkin. They were together for more than eight years before breaking up in 2011. Despite their fame, the couple kept their relationship as private as possible.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine hit her hard.
After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Mila Kunis, a native of Ukraine, decided to speak out. Although Kunis considers herself an American “to the core” – after all, she moved to the U.S. at 7 – the invasion triggered something unlike anything she had experienced.
Immediately, she and Ashton Kutcher came out in support of Ukraine while noting that it was essential to avoid backbiting the Russian people.
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were criticized for supporting Danny Masterson.
For a few years, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were highly respected for advocating for humanitarian causes. But all of that came crashing down when character letters written by Kunis and Kutcher in support of “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson, who was later convicted of raping two women, came to light. In these letters, the couple describes Masterson as a positive influence, big brother, and other praise. As a result, Kutcher and Kunis resigned from their positions with Thorn (an NGO that Kutcher co-founded) to fight child sexual exploitation.
Reacting to the criticism, the couple released a video on Instagram to clarify their stance. “‘These letters were not written to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or the validity of the jury’s decision,’ they explained in the video.” “‘In the letter, we support the victims. We have done so historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future.” Their efforts did little to mitigate the fallout and may have made people even angrier. Variety critic Daniel D’Addario called the video “a bizarre document of modern fame,” adding, “If the goal was to present us with a candid portion of Ashton and Mila letting us into their world, it failed.”
