Savoy was born in Switzerland and is of Spanish descent. He has previously served as a coach for multiple African national teams. The 51-year-old Swiss coach is currently in his second tenure with Les Fauves. He has indicated that he will promptly accept an invitation to join the Super Eagles if extended.
“The reasons for the national team’s underperformance remain unclear.” The expatriate coaches currently in place lack the requisite knowledge of the African context and may not be the optimal choice for the team. With my technical staff, we will achieve notable success and potentially reclaim our position as one of Africa’s top teams. The rationale behind the unconventional decision remains opaque. The selected coaches, whose identities remain obscure, were ultimately dismissed. “If I am granted the opportunity to lead the team, I am confident that I can elevate Nigeria’s standing in African football,” he stated in an interview with Brila FM.
A mere month after his official appointment, Finidi George resigned as the Super Eagles coach. Savoy also declined to apply for the vacant position.

“I cannot apply while contracted to another national team. While this may seem unfair, in the context of football, when a team is seeking to hire a coach or technical staff, they can make a phone call to initiate the process. However, I am currently bound by a contract, which makes it an inappropriate time for me to engage in such discussions. It is not a situation conducive to a fair outcome,” the Swiss coach concluded.
The Nigeria Football Federation has been engaged in discussions with several foreign coaches, though definitive agreements have yet to be reached thus far.
