In a nationally televised address regarding the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, President Bola Tinubu presented the rationale behind his administration’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy.
Tinubu indicated that the subsidy was eliminated to address long-standing economic mismanagement and facilitate necessary reforms. His commitment to these actions was unwavering, as he stated, “These actions were pivotal in rectifying the decades of economic mismanagement that have impeded our progress.”
He justified his decision by citing substantial growth in government revenue, which reached ₦9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024, representing a notable increase compared to the previous year. This increase is attributed to measures aimed at closing revenue leakages, enhancing automation, and mobilizing funds creatively without burdening citizens.
The President highlighted the positive impact on the non-oil sector, where productivity is increasing and new opportunities are emerging. He reassured Nigerians that he understood their concerns and the need for patience during this period of recovery. He urged them to support economic reforms and to refrain from actions that might impede the progress that has been achieved thus far.
“With 25 years of democratic governance, we must not allow those who are adversarial to democracy to exploit unrest as a means of derailing our progress,” Tinubu stated. “We must move forward, not backward.”
