The Nation reported that Ayilara’s demise occurred in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.

According to sources close to the family, he had undergone prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday before succumbing to his illness just hours later.

The family of the late Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, has released a statement announcing his passing.

A senior police official in Akwa Ibom State, who requested anonymity due to the matter’s sensitivity, has also confirmed the CP’s demise.

PUNCH Online tried independently verifying this information from the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Thursday morning; however, calls to his line were unsuccessful.

In November 2023, Ayilara was appointed as the acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos, having previously held the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Ayilara, who had previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, assumed the role previously held by AIG Idowu Owohunwa.

In February 2024, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, appointed Ayilara as the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State.
