If you like crab sticks, look away. They might be ruined.

How much do we know about how our food is made? The less we know about what we eat, the better.

We’re going to look at how crab sticks are made. It’s probably not what you expect.

People love crab sticks, but many don’t know they don’t include crab. Many have been rebranded as seafood sticks instead.

A video on YouTube shows how seafood treats are made. It’s all a bit grey.

The process starts with frozen fish, often Alaskan pollock, and sometimes other ingredients.

The meat is processed with other ingredients such as potato starch, egg whites, salt, and sugar.

The grey sludge doesn’t look appetizing.

The grey, sludgy food is put into a machine, which makes it into a strip that looks like a fishy candy cane.

The sticks are cut and covered in orange to make the crab sticks we know. The rest of the food is sold as a substitute for crab meat.

Not very appetizing, is it?

If you don’t like crab sticks, you’re not alone. Others have said they’ll never eat them again.

One person said: Thanks for sharing! You didn’t say where the red coloring came from. I’ll never repurchase this! Thanks for the wake-up call!

A second added: “I always thought this was disgusting. Now I know it is.”

A third said: “This looks disgusting. I’ll never eat them again.”

The snack doesn’t contain crab. It’s shaped and colored to look like crab meat. In the UK, they are called seafood sticks (or crab imitation sticks).
