The 70s were a crazy time. There was a lot of anger towards the government and its war plans and a lot of consumerism, which was starting to take over from both of these things.

Sylvester Stallone and Henry Winkler in 1974.

In the age of Instagram, everyone has mastered posing, and just to let Sylvester Stallone know – this isn’t it. Henry Winkler is doing a much better job of being modest yet intense. Sly needs to learn to be more subtle – and quickly!

Shelley Duvall (1970)

Here’s Shelley Duvall wearing a cat costume way before it was popular—in the cutest shirt ever! Horror fans will know her from The Shining, but this photo was taken on the Brewster McCloud set.

The darling of the avant-garde

In the lively 1970s, Shelley Duvall brought a unique charm to the big screen. From her first significant role in “Brewster McCloud” to her memorable performance in “The Shining,” Duvall created a special place for herself in the film world with her strange and engaging performances.

Mark Hamill and Annie Potts starred together in the 1978 film Corvette Summer.

You might know Annie Potts from Young Sheldon, but here she is in a less-than-impressive 1970s movie called Corvette Summer. It was her first film, but Mark Hamill was about to become a global superstar in Star Wars.

Ingrid Pitt.

The actress Ingrid Pitt is best known for her roles in horror films, including Doctor Who. She also has a cult following in vampire films, such as Countess Dracula and The Vampire Lovers. Pitt was also a very productive writer, writing a book called Dracula Who…? She died in 2010.

Jack Warden.

The actor, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his roles in Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait, was a star of the 1970s. You might remember him from All the President’s Men and more recent films like While You Were Sleeping and The Replacements. He died in 2006.

Peggy Lipton.

Norma Jennings from Twin Peaks was a great ’70s actor (actually, her role as Julie in The Mod Squad started in the ’60s and continued into the ’70s). She was considered an “it girl” before taking a 15-year break to focus on being a mum and then coming back to the screen. She’s Rashida Jones’ mum!

Jill St. John.

Tiffany Case from the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever (the first American Bond girl!) and Jill St. John have acted in many films. Jill St. John was tired of acting in films, so she started working on TV shows like The Love Boat, Magnum, P.I., and Fantasy Island.

Ryan O’Neal.

MacGraw’s co-star in Love Story (and eventually Farrah Fawcett’s husband), Ryan O’Neal, continued working in the 1970s, including in Paper Moon and What’s Up, Doc? He also had a recurring role on the TV show Bones. He died in 2023.

Cheryl Tiegs.

Cheryl Tiegs was the perfect example of a 1970s Sports Illustrated model. Her famous “pink bikini” cover was one of the most memorable images of the 1970s. She brought an energetic and youthful vibe to her work and continued to model into the ’80s (and act after that).

Tippi Hedrin.

If you’re unfamiliar with Tippi Hedrin, she often worked with Alfred Hitchcock. However, she spoke out against the way he mistreated her. His actions ruined her career, and her contract was sold in 1966. She never acted in big films again, but she still acted in some movies in the 1970s, like The Harrad Experiment. She also started working to help protect the environment in Africa and kept doing this for her whole life.
