A high-profile incident occurred at a McDonald’s restaurant in northern São Paulo, which went viral on social media within hours. Published footage shows employees and customers fighting, with shouting and food-throwing. The company has already announced that it has launched an internal investigation.
The incident occurred last Saturday at the chain’s restaurant on Deputado Emílio Carlos Avenue in the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha neighborhood. Bystanders captured the incident on video and posted it online, where it quickly went viral.
What is known about the conflict?
According to photos and videos posted on the Rodando a Norte Instagram and TrapgruOfcl Facebook pages, the altercation involved two McDonald’s employees and a married couple. A child was standing next to the couple and began crying during the altercation.
Social media users speculate that the conflict stemmed from a dispute over the order or the quality of the food, but there is no official confirmation of this theory. According to the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), no reports have been filed with the Civil Police regarding this incident.
The video shows one of the customers picking up food that had fallen on the floor and throwing it at a restaurant employee. In response, the employee grabs a box, presumably from a burger, and throws it at the man standing next to the woman. The customer then takes the child to a corner of the room, trying to distance him from the situation.
However, the conflict doesn’t end there: the woman picks up another tray of food and throws it at the staff. Other restaurant employees attempt to intervene and stop the altercation. In the background, shouting, swearing, and the customer’s demand for his money back are heard: “I want my money!” g1 journalists reported that they are attempting to contact those involved in the conflict—both employees and customers—for comment.
On Wednesday, McDonald’s press service issued an official statement expressing regret over the incident and confirming an investigation.
“The company reports that following the incident, it is working with the restaurant team and is taking all necessary measures. The brand strongly condemns any violence and reaffirms its commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for employees and guests,” the statement read.
