For a long time, I told myself that coming home late was just a normal part of life for new parents. Our daughter, Sophie, was only three months old, and I assumed Elon was struggling to balance work and family. That evening, I called him again before dinner. "Will you be home soon?" I asked. "I don't know. And stop constantly checking up on me," he replied irritably. I quietly told him I loved him. Silence was the only response. I set the phone down next to Sophie's bottle and tended to the baby. But a few seconds later, I heard voices. The call hadn't ended. First came a woman's laughter. Then Elon's voice. He talked about our family affairs as if I were a stranger. He was annoyed by photos of Sophie, by my questions about when he'd be home, and even by my attempts to show him affection. And then came the words that made my heart sink. He said he wanted to leave me. He said he was going to marry someone else. Her name was Sierra. Elon called me a burden and complained that we weren't intimate anymore. Then I heard a sound—like a kiss. I didn't wait to hear any more. I ended the call myself. When he came home that evening with a cheap bouquet, kissed me on the forehead, and said, "I missed my girls." I smiled. "We missed you too." But now I knew that a completely different life was hiding behind that smile. The next day, Elon suggested I quit my job. He said daycare was too expensive and his salary would be enough for us. Before, I would have seen that as an act of care. Now, it sounded different. For the next six days, I said nothing. I noticed him set a new password on his phone, refuse to let it out of his sight—even in the bathroom—and start wearing cologne before every "late shift." I didn't make a scene. Instead, I confirmed my return to work and met with a family lawyer to understand my rights. For our anniversary, I had initially planned a simple family dinner. But at the last minute, I invited both our families. When everyone had finished eating, I raised my glass of water. And I told them about that phone call. About Sierra. About what Elon had said. About his plans to divorce me. He tried to make excuses. He said that after Sophie was born, he had felt neglected. But I replied: "You could have talked to me about feeling lonely. Cheating was a choice you made yourself." After a few minutes of silence, Elon confessed: Sierra had entered his life long before that call. I took our prenuptial agreement out of my bag and placed it on the table. Not as a threat. But as a reminder to myself: even before I knew the truth, I had preserved at least some of my independence. Three weeks later, I returned to work. Now, Elon and I spoke mostly about Sophie. I handled everything else calmly, with a lawyer's help. For too long, I had thought that love meant losing myself in someone else's desires. Now I knew better. My life didn't end the moment our marriage did. Quite the opposite. For the first time in a long while, I held the pen in my own hands—and I wrote the next chapter.
