Planes, trains, and space travel… along with a collection of luxury retreats around the globe, billionaire Richard Branson is transforming our landscapes and skies with his Virgin brand. While a hurricane damaged his primary residence, he is rebuilding it. Necker Island is being rebuilt. Richard is enjoying rest at his other Virgin Limited Edition properties, including his newly-renovated Mallorcan estate. “Son Bunyola is my favorite Mallorcan retreat. I try to visit as often as I can,” he says.

“Mallorca has been special to me since I first visited as a child.” But he had disputes with the local authorities, who refused planning permission for a luxury boutique hotel at his spectacular Son Bunyola. This resulted in his selling up in 2002, including his iconic hotel, La Residencia.

After changing his mind and realizing he missed Mallorca, he repurchased Son Bunyola for about £11 million in 2015. He plans to convert it into the best eco-resort in Europe. The estate includes a finca building from the 1800s surrounded by vines, citrus fruit trees, almonds, and olive trees. It’s beautiful, and I look forward to seeing how plans progress!

The estate is part of a World Heritage site and sprawls over 700 acres. It’s located between Esporles and Banyalbufar. It has nature, villages, restaurants, and hotels. The Tramuntana mountain range dominates the region and is home to some of the island’s most historical and picturesque towns. My son named his daughter after the village of Deià, one of the most beautiful in the world.

The property overlooks five kilometers of coastline. It includes a historic Mallorcan manor house and three country houses, recently transformed into ultra-luxury villas for exclusive rent. We usually stay in Sa Terra Rotja, our four-bedroom villa near the edge of the estate. I’d be torn if I had to pick a favorite. It blends old and new with elegant results. A private terrace and pool overlook the sparkling Med, while a peaceful pebble beach is a short stroll away.

In traditional Mallorcan style, Son Balagueret is a three-bedroom abode with a courtyard and original 13th-century turret. The five-bedroom Sa Punta de S’Aguila is built into the landscape along a track above the coastline, with a flower-lined terrace offering panoramic mountain-sea views.

Each villa has a private pool and a concierge service. Richard adds, “The views are stunning!” He says staying at Son Bunyola is more than just a resting place. All guests are encouraged to treat the villas like their own home. Richard wants guests to feel special and receive excellent customer service. He aims to create a unique experience.

Son Bunyola was a vital estate that produced olive oil and wine. Richard has planted almond and citrus trees and vines with the ancient olive trees. He gives back to the community by offering training and employment. “We recruit locally and source food and wine from the region. We work hard to protect the beautiful landscape. Our approach includes responsible supply chain management, fair trade policies, ethical dealings with employees and the local community, and the environment.”

What does he like to do here? “Mallorca has so much to offer, something for everyone.”

The charismatic business magnate’s world-record-breaking boat, Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, was found abandoned on the island a few years ago after being sold to a sultan. He holds world records in kitesurfing.

“I like to stay active and adventurous, so I go hiking and cycling in Mallorca. I also recommend sailing along the Tramuntana coastline, where you can snorkel and explore caves. The area is perfect for scuba diving and fishing.” He enjoys sports and the island’s culture when he’s not out and about. He also likes yoga and Tai Chi. Richard is good at chess and tennis. The court is just a short walk away.

“Mallorca is special to me because it’s a great place to relax, laugh, learn, and love with my family.” Eva-Deia has a brother, Bluey, while Richard has a daughter, Holly, who gave him twin grandchildren, Etta and Artie. Now that he has grandchildren, Richard says he enjoys spending more time in a place that means a great deal to them all. “My favorite memories are simple: talking, admiring the scenery, and enjoying meals and good company. We’ve had a special bond with the island for several generations, and I’m sure it will go on for generations to come!”
