Senator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South, has disclosed that he earns a total of N21m monthly as take-home pay, contradicting the official figures released by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). The RMAFC had stated that each senator receives a total of N1.06m in salary and allowances per month.

In an interview with the British Broadcasting Hausa Service, Senator Kawu revealed that although his monthly salary is around N1m, his total take-home pay is significantly higher. He attributed the difference to various allowances and deductions.

This revelation has sparked controversy, as it contradicts the official figures and raises questions about the transparency of lawmakers’ earnings. The issue has been a subject of debate, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently criticizing federal lawmakers for fixing their own salaries and emoluments.
