Bewitched was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1960s, and millions worldwide loved it. Between 1964 and 1972, fans tuned in every week to watch the adventures of the enchanting witch Samantha and her family.

The show’s ratings were down not just because of Dick York’s sudden departure but also because of other issues. The show started out feeling new and fresh, but over time, the quality of the writing got worse, and a lot of the storylines were copied from other shows.

We all fell for Alice Pearce when she played Samantha’s nosy neighbor, Gladys. She kept spotting her practicing witchcraft but couldn’t convince her husband she was telling the truth.

Pearce was on the show from 1964 and had a secret all this time. The actress never told any of her co-stars that she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer a couple of months before she got the role. She did not look ill before she died in 1966, and she was given an Emmy for acting after she died.

Aunt Clara was a fan favorite in the show, and it was always entertaining to watch her spells backfire.

Elizabeth Montgomery became famous thanks to her role as Samantha Stephens, but that wasn’t the only character she played on the show. The famous actress also played Samantha’s free-spirited cousin Serena in a couple of episodes.

She met director William Asher on the set of the 1963 film Johnny Cool, which he directed and she starred in. The two quickly started dating and got married shortly after.

They then started looking for their next project together and found what they wanted in Bewitched.

One of the most famous parts of the show was when Samantha wiggled her nose, which was based on a twitch that Montgomery had whenever she got nervous.

According to Erin Murphy, who played her daughter, camera tricks made the wiggle look even better. The film would be sped up a bit to make it look like she was moving faster, and a xylophone was always in the background.

Elizabeth Montgomery was pregnant three times while the show was on, but her first pregnancy wasn’t part of the storyline.

York left the show to focus on his health after suffering a severe back injury on the set of 1959’s They Came to Cordura that changed his life forever. He often had to be “away on business” and could usually be seen seated or lying down. He decided to leave after suffering a seizure during the filming of the episode “Daddy Does His Thing” in 1969.

York was taken to the hospital after collapsing on set, ending his acting career. It wasn’t easy to leave the show, but he decided it was time to focus on his recovery.

Darrin and Endora didn’t get on, but Dick York and Agnes Moorehead were very different. The actress found it hard to adjust to life after he left the show because of the close friendship they had developed over the years.

Dick Sargent might not be everyone’s favorite Darrin Stephens, but this is the role he is most famous for. He was brave when he came out as gay in 1991. Two years before this, Sargent had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He revealed that his poor health had led many people to believe he had AIDS.

After he died in 1994, his co-star Elizabeth Montgomery said he was “a great friend” and praised his courage.

After Bewitched finished, Murphy appeared in over 100 commercials and worked as a casting director, makeup artist, fashion stylist, acting teacher, and motivational speaker. Now she writes mainly about fashion and beauty.

Many different child actresses played Tabitha, but ABC had even more candidates for the role. At one point, Oscar winners Helen Hunt and Jodie Foster were considered for the role of Samantha’s daughter.

After Alice Pearce died in 1966, Sandra Gould took over the role of the nosy neighbor Gladys. With her over-the-top acting and high-pitched screams, Sandra Gould made the character her own, and viewers fully enjoyed her performance on the show.

Elizabeth Montgomery had been fighting colon cancer for many years, but sadly, she died in 1995. She had married Robert Foxworth two years before her death, after living together for twenty years.

The show Bewitched was such a massive success that it was only a matter of time before Hollywood executives decided to make more. This happened in 2005 when a big-screen remake starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell was released.
