Despite his musical oeuvre often centering on love and heartbreak, Sir Cliff Richard’s romantic life remains enigmatical.

The octogenarian has never entered into matrimony, a decision he has previously attributed to his profound dedication to his musical career, which he asserted would, in his estimation, engender an incompatibility with the institution of matrimony.

However, there have been several instances of misinformation, including the dancer whose heart he ‘ruthlessly’ broke and the famous girlfriend who became sick of him ‘harping on’ about their relationship decades later.

Sir Cliff’s most prominent relationship was with the tennis champion and television presenter Sue Barker, with whom he was romantically involved briefly during the 1980s. The pair first encountered each other at a tennis tournament in 1981 and rapidly formed a bond over their mutual passion for the sport and their Christian faith. Despite their evident similarities, Sue harbored reservations concerning the considerable disparity in age, which stood at 16 years. Sir Cliff was 41 years old, whereas Sue was 25 at the time. The sports star also expressed dissatisfaction with the intense scrutiny surrounding their courtship, which is understood to have lasted less than a year.

Eventually, the couple’s relationship deteriorated. According to Sue, Cliff enlisted the assistance of one of his acquaintances to terminate the relationship on his behalf.

Sir Cliff has spoken on multiple occasions about his relationship with Sue, who is now aged 67. On one occasion, he admitted that he had considered proposing marriage but ultimately decided against it because he did not love her enough.

Although the pair remain friends to this day, Sue, who is now married to landscape gardener Lance Tankard, has previously expressed her frustrations about Sir Cliff continually ‘harping on’ about a relationship that she regarded as more of a friendship.

Sir Cliff was also previously romantically involved with dancer Jackie Irving. It is reported that the pair were ‘virtually inseparable’ for one fateful summer in Blackpool during the 1960s. In his 2020 autobiography, Cliff Richard: The Dreamer, Sir Cliff recollected their long-ago seaside romance: “We socialized extensively during the shows and in our leisure time. Jackie was a source of great amusement, and it is also worth noting that she was an excellent dance companion.”

The vocalist of the musical group Mistletoe and Wine contemplated proposing marriage to the ‘exceedingly beautiful’ 19-year-old Jackie but swiftly ascertained that such an event would be incongruent with his aspirations regarding his career as a popular musician.

In his argument, Sir Cliff countered: This suggests that the individual in question may have experienced a deficiency in their emotional attachment to their partner. However, the fact that one may not comprehend the content of the text does not necessarily imply an absence of compassion on the author’s part.
