We come into contact with our bedding frequently, so it’s essential to keep it fresh and hygienic. Regular washing helps maintain cleanliness and creates a comfortable sleep environment. But how often should you wash your bedding, and how do you do it correctly? Below are five simple and helpful tips.
Tip 1: How often should you wash your bedding?
The interval depends on how often you use it, the material it’s made of, and your individual needs. On average, we recommend:
Sheets – every 7-14 days
Pillowcases – every 7-14 days
Duvet covers – every 3-4 weeks
Blankets – every 6-8 months (wash or dry clean)
Pillows – every 12-18 months (dry clean)
These timeframes are approximate: if you sweat a lot, are sick, or sleep with pets, you should wash them more often.
Tip 2: Choose the correct washing temperature
The fabric’s cleanliness and durability depend on temperature.
Cotton – tolerates high temperatures well. 60-90°C is optimal for removing dirt and bacteria.
Linen – similar to cotton, can withstand hot washing (60-90°C).
Synthetics – are sensitive to heat and may shrink. 30-60°C or cold water is best.
Wool – requires delicate care. Wash at 30°C or in cold water on a gentle cycle.
Tip 3: Use the right amount of detergent
Overdosing on detergent won’t make your laundry cleaner; in fact, it can cause skin irritation due to residue.
Dosage depends on load size, water hardness, and detergent type. It’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and adjust the amount as needed.
Tip 4: Optional Additional Products
You can improve washing performance with additional additives:
Fabric softener softens fabrics and adds fragrance.
Bleach helps remove stubborn stains and restore whiteness, but it isn’t suitable for all materials (for example, it’s not ideal for wool and some delicate fabrics).
Tip 5: Proper drying is key to longevity
Drying affects the shape, softness, and lifespan of your laundry.
Tumble drying is a quick option, but not all fabrics can withstand high temperatures. For delicate fabrics, choose a gentle cycle.
Air drying is the best method for wool and other delicate fabrics. It’s essential to dry the garment completely before use.
Ironing helps remove wrinkles and makes the fabric softer to the touch. However, synthetic materials are generally not designed for high ironing temperatures.
Blankets and pillows often require special care, so it’s best to leave them to the professionals. Dry cleaning will extend the life of the items and ensure better hygiene.
The right temperature, the right amount of detergent, and gentle drying will help keep fabrics fresh and long-lasting.
