For ten years, I was convinced that my grandson's father had vanished. I didn't know why he had left, where he was, or if he even thought about the boy. My daughter, Tigan, hardly ever spoke of him, and after she died, I stopped asking questions I never got answers to anyway. But on the tenth anniversary of my daughter's death, a woman I didn't know approached me at her graveside. She was holding a sealed envelope. The woman looked first at my grandson, Lucas, and then at me. "Your daughter gave this to me on Lucas's birthday. She told me to give it to you if anything happened to her." It took me a moment to understand what she meant. "Why only now?" The woman—Trudy—glanced at the headstone. "That's what Tigan wanted. She said you were to receive the letter only when Lucas was old enough to know the truth." Back home, I opened the envelope. Inside was an old photograph. My daughter looked so young. A teenage boy stood beside her, his arm around her waist. I didn't recognize him at first. It was Nathan—Lucas's father. Then I read the letter. Tigan wrote that Nathan had known about the pregnancy from the very beginning. He hadn't just disappeared by accident; he had been terrified. His parents had also been against the baby: their son already had plans for his education and career—a future that left no room for a young family. But the hardest part was yet to come. Nathan came to the hospital the day Lucas was born. He had seen me carrying my newborn grandson down the hallway. He saw the baby—and was terrified all over again. Instead of coming inside, he turned around and walked away. Tigan had known about it. She even told him he could come back. But Nathan replied that he wasn't ready. Then my daughter said something I will never forget: "Don't come back until you can stay." In the letter, Teagan asked me for only one thing: never to make Lucas hate his father. "Tell him the truth when he's ready. But don't pass on my anger to him." I found Nathan a few days later. He lived just a few hours' drive away. He was thirty. And, as it turned out, he had known where we lived all those years. "Why did you never come?" I asked. He answered without making excuses: "Because I was a coward." Nathan admitted he had watched Lucas from afar—sometimes seeing photos of the boy online—but never dared to show himself. I asked him to write a letter to his son. He wrote six pages. He didn't make excuses, blame his parents, or demand forgiveness. "I am your biological father, but I understand that doesn't make me your dad. You owe me nothing. If you ever want to get to know me, I'll be here." I gave the letter to Lucas. At first, the boy didn't want to meet his father. A few days later, he changed his mind. They met at a baseball field. Lucas's first question was: "Did you really come to the hospital?" "Yes." "And you left?" "Yes." "Why?" Nathan answered honestly: "I was afraid of the responsibility. But I was never afraid of you." Lucas was silent for a long time. Then he noticed the baseball glove. "Do you play?" Nathan smiled: "I used to." A few minutes later, they were tossing the ball back and forth. That didn't erase ten years. That didn't make Nathan a perfect father, nor did it make Lucas forget he'd been abandoned. But it opened up the possibility for them to start over.
