A passenger aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Sun was filming near Alaska’s Hubbard Glacier when the ship suddenly struck part of an iceberg.

The impact was loud enough to make passengers think something serious had happened. Moments later, the iceberg rolled over in the water beside the ship, revealing just how close it had been to the vessel.

“Then all of a sudden, boom – the whole ship shakes,” passenger Benjamin Talbott told CBS. “I looked at the front of the ship and all I saw was this iceberg just turning over and coming down. I was like, ‘Oh my God, we hit an iceberg.’”

Talbott said he and his brother noticed the iceberg shortly before the collision. He began recording on his phone, capturing the moment the ship made contact with the ice.

The video shows the iceberg moving alongside the ship as passengers react to the sudden impact. At one point, a man can be heard shouting, “Titanic 2.0!”

Despite the dramatic footage, the collision did not lead to a disaster like the one referenced by the passenger. Norwegian Sun was able to continue operating at low speed after being inspected by authorities.

The ship was first turned around and taken to Juneau, Alaska, where it underwent an inspection. It was later cleared to travel to Seattle for repairs. Norwegian Sun arrived at the port on Sunday.

The vessel can accommodate around 2,000 passengers. Several cruises were canceled while the ship was being assessed and repaired.

A family who was on board told CBS that the sound of the impact resembled a door being slammed loudly. No major damage was reported, but the ship’s route was changed as a precaution.

The incident inevitably brought back memories of the Titanic, which struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on April 14, 1912. That collision caused the passenger liner to sink and resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people.

The iceberg involved in the Titanic disaster was estimated to rise about 100 feet above the surface of the water. The iceberg encountered by Norwegian Sun was far less destructive, but the passenger video shows how quickly a seemingly calm cruise can turn into a frightening experience.
