Mr. Rood was not too happy when he learned about his daughter’s decision to get engaged. He was convinced that the whole thing was a bad idea. Janice was too young to even think about such things while studying biology.

As a result, her father gave his daughter an ultimatum: either she would break up with Wilson, or he would stop helping her with college money. She had to decide what was more important—getting the education she cherished or falling in love with a young man.

When Matt finally decided that he wanted to be Laura’s friend, he started following her around the playground all day long. During an interview, he told Today: “The first time I saw her, I don’t remember, but she was always the girl who let me follow her around.”

At first, Laura didn’t understand why Matt followed her around and thought he was a fool, but she soon discovered that he was funny and good-natured. They quickly became best friends.

And soon, it wasn’t enough for Matt and Laura to spend time together at daycare, and they wanted to meet in the afternoons and on weekends.

One day, Matt decided to make the relationship official by standing up in class and telling everyone that he and Laura were getting married.

Although no one believed Matt could fulfill his promise, he and Laura remained best friends throughout preschool.

Even though they were only four years old, their bond was extraordinary.

Matt and Laura went to different schools.

Nevertheless, Matt and Laura still spent as much time together as possible.

After ten years, Laura and Matt were ready to enter high school. Now they were back in different schools, and thoughts of old friends rarely crossed their minds. It was all the more surprising when something unique happened in the fall of Laura’s first year. She was playing with her friend’s cell phone when suddenly a familiar name popped up on the screen – Matt Grodsky!

When she saw Matt’s name, Laura couldn’t believe her eyes: just looking at him brought back many happy childhood memories.

Then Laura told her friend about her special bond with Matt in kindergarten.

Laura’s stories about her preschool romance with Matt got her friend thinking. She decided to recreate that romance by framing Matt and Laura!

Matt didn’t take long to reach out to her and give her a helping hand. After getting her number, he immediately texted Laura, and after chatting for a while, they decided to meet up.

The old friends were back in their kindergarten life in no time.

The first date went very well, and soon, they officially started dating and became boyfriend and girlfriend.

They were still in different schools, but they were older and could drive independently, which gave them the freedom to pursue their relationship. They were back together and would run into each other at school dances and other events. But as they entered college, the relationship hit a snag again.

In their senior year of high school, Laura and Matt had to make a tough decision. They wanted to attend colleges in different states, but they tried to keep each other.

After much deliberation, Matt and Laura decided to attend the colleges of their choice but not give up on each other.

Even though they lived in different time zones, it wasn’t always easy, but thanks to Facetime and social media, they tried to “see each other” every day.

The guys made it through, and finally, their senior year came, but this time in college. Matt decided to throw a memorable party to celebrate the start of their senior year of high school. Matt wanted to surprise Laura with something romantic and quiet. He planned to have a picnic at their old daycare center.

When Matt had a picnic at their old kindergarten, Laura was amazed, but when he suddenly got down on one knee and proposed to her, she was utterly shocked. The unexpected proposal took her breath away.

They married on December 30, 2016, at the Arizona Historical Society. For their first dance, the preschoolers in love chose Elton John’s song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” in memory of Matt singing Disney hits to Laura when they were kids. Just when you thought they couldn’t get any more adorable.

Laura sent the How We Met editorial team their story.

Once upon a time, Laura and Matt were used to hearing from others that their relationship was unique. Laura has become an official Grodsky, so she decided to share her story.
