The combination of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton was simply a heavenly pairing in country music, but many fans hoped they would eventually become more than just duet partners. Having loved the couple’s performances, fans eagerly awaited the day when Dolly and Kenny would announce they were finally a couple. Of course, that day never came, but there was a good reason. Kenny had once spoken out on the subject himself, and then, after his passing, Dolly realized it was time to tell the whole story.
The romantic tension between Kenny and Dolly first arose in 1983 when Barry Gibb, a member of the Bee Gees, wrote and produced the song “Islands in the Stream.”
For four days, Kenny and Barry unsuccessfully recorded the song. No matter how hard they tried, the song wouldn’t come out. They needed a voice that was sweet, melodic, and completely original. Yes, they required Dolly!
It didn’t take perfect eyesight to realize something was between Kenny and Dolly.
Dolly had been working with Carl since 1966. Although she repeatedly told reporters they were happily married, the tabloids didn’t believe it. They were attracted to the more tantalizing possibility of a love affair. These suspicions were only heightened when people noticed that Dolly’s husband was never around during essential moments in her life.
After all, on stage, Kenny and Dolly were hard to miss. It was obvious that they shared a special love for each other. And Kenny’s wife could tell there were moments when the temptation was too strong for both of them.
However, Marianne knew almost everything that was going on with her husband. Because of their open communication, there was a great deal of trust between them. But when Kenny turned 50, the mid-life crisis he was going through proved too much for their marriage.
However, despite this, Dolly remained faithful to her husband and said in an interview, “I married a very good man….. We were just best buddies and friends, and it works!”. And in 2011, she finally explained why Karl never appeared publicly with her.
Journalists could remember Kenny and Dolly’s connection – even after 30 years! The two country stars still had to answer reporters’ questions about the secret to their unwavering bond. It wasn’t until 2013 that they finally admitted why their romance never blossomed.
Dolly said, “It never occurred to us that he was with anyone….. I’ve been with my husband for 48 years.” She slyly added: “That doesn’t mean I’m blind or dead.” Kenny began the conversation by joking, “She never thought I was handsome.”
” I always thought he was handsome,” Dolly said. ” And I just never thought of him that way … That would have ruined it.”
It wasn’t until after Kenny died in 2020 that Dolly realized how she felt about her longtime friend. ” You never know how much you love someone until they’re gone,” she shared in an emotional social media post.
However, the country music legend once said: “If you don’t like the road you’re walking down, start blazing a different one.”
Dolly’s personal life is not advertised much, and she shares sparingly. As a businesswoman and an entertainer, she knows that her words can affect her career. Despite this, she still speaks out where she sees fit.
In her interview with Oprah, she believes that not having children to raise and being in a relationship with a man who is as independent as she is has been the key to success in her career.
In this day and age, it’s getting harder and harder not to annoy some people. The issues are impatient, whether it’s about something complicated, like politics, or something more personal, like a woman’s choices. And while Dolly decides whether or not to voice her opinion, she always keeps one thing in mind.
” I think we all have a right to be who we are, and it’s not for me to judge … God is the judge, not us. I try to be myself. And I try to let everybody else be themselves.” Regardless of what anyone thinks of her, Dolly will continue to smile.
Controversies hit celebrities like a running train, but Dolly invariably finds a way out. This again proves that an open heart and generosity of spirit in the music industry is for a reason!
