Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com Inc., invested $42 million in a monumental project. The project is a clock designed to last for 10,000 years. According to Fox News, the clock is under construction inside a mountain in West Texas.

Bezos announced his intention to support the clock in 2011, saying, ‘It’s a special clock, designed to be a symbol, an icon for long-term thinking,’ according to Daily Mail. Construction reportedly began in 2018.

The clock stands 500 feet tall and is designed to last for thousands of years. It uses Earth’s thermal cycles to operate and includes a solar synchronizer, a pendulum, a chime generator, and gears and dials. Its unique feature is that it ticks once a year, emphasizing its long-term purpose.

The clock can withstand natural forces such as temperature changes, humidity, and dust. This clock’s resilience ensures its longevity and functionality over the millennia. Its components are made of marine-grade stainless steel and high-tech ceramics chosen for their durability.

The clock’s chime generator can create more than 3.5 million unique bell chime sequences, ensuring that no two days will sound alike. It is synchronized with the moon and sun to track the year, century, and millennium.

The clock will have five room-sized chambers to mark significant milestones: the first, 10th, 100th, 1,000th, and 10,000th year anniversaries. Future generations will fill these chambers, continuing the clock’s legacy.

The Long Now Foundation spokesperson stated that a completion date has yet to be set. Visitors will need to take a significant hike to reach the clock, which will be located in the remote Sierra Mountains of Texas. This experience is designed to provoke contemplation and reflection.

Bezos is widely recognized for his immense wealth and luxurious lifestyle. He owns a massive 417-foot yacht worth approximately $500 million and a support yacht valued at $75 million. His real estate portfolio further exemplifies this extravagance, featuring a $79 million mansion in Florida’s “Billionaire Bunker” and a $68 million home nearby. Additionally, he owns other lavish properties, such as a 9-acre Beverly Hills mansion purchased for $165 million and an estate in Maui, Hawaii.

His super yachts and multiple mansions represent immediate, tangible luxury. However, the clock symbolizes the importance of leaving behind a legacy for the future.
