At first, she thought she was mistaken. One of her eyelashes seemed too long to be normal. But when specialists measured it, the result was so extraordinary that she became a world record holder.
You Jianxia, a Chinese woman, has amazed people with her unusual appearance for several years. Her eyelashes aren’t just long—the longest reaches 20.5 centimeters. That is roughly the length of a small ruler.
She first noticed this unusual feature back in 2015. According to her, the lashes grew gradually and kept getting longer over the years. In 2016, the recorded length was 12.4 centimeters.
One might have expected the growth to stop there. But a few years later, something unexpected happened: the length increased by more than another 8 centimeters.
A new measurement showed 20.5 cm, with the longest lash located on the upper eyelid of her left eye.
You decided to find out why and consulted doctors. However, specialists could not identify a precise cause.
The genetic theory was also ruled out; she claims that none of her relatives have such eyelashes. She also hasn’t undergone any special procedures to make them grow.
The most interesting part is that the world record holder doesn’t consider her eyelashes a problem. She says they don’t interfere with her daily life and even help save time on makeup.
“I don’t need eyeliner or eyeshadow,” she explains. Her natural lashes create the effect of a defined line around her eyes on their own. However, when asked about the origin of her unusual record, Yu says it’s unlikely to be found in any medical textbook.
She once spent over 480 days in the mountains, a period she later came to associate with her distinctive appearance. Yu believes her long eyelashes may be a gift from the Buddha.
Scientists and doctors have yet to offer a convincing explanation. Yu herself takes the situation in stride, believing that unusual physical traits need not be hidden.
After all, what strikes one person as odd might be a unique feature for another—one that could eventually earn them a world record.
