Liv Tyler had all the makings of Hollywood’s next big star in the early 2000s. In the early-to-mid 1990s, she appeared in films such as Silent Fall, Heavy, and Empire Records. Tyler quickly transitioned to mainstream success with That Thing You Do!, Tom Hanks’ feature writing and directorial debut. 

A few years later, Tyler’s gut instinct would take her to Middle-Earth, where she joined Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy as Arwen. This only begs the question: She was a promising young movie star, but how did she all but vanished from Hollywood? Why don’t we see much of Liv Tyler anymore?

This fear of acting after ‘The Lord of the Rings’ led to her disappearance from Hollywood.

Liv Tyler was not intimidated by Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, but instead excited about having job security. However, after the films were completed in 2003, Tyler felt ready to move on from Middle Earth and explore new acting opportunities. 

In her first film after ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ Tyler struggled to adjust to performing without the safety net of Jackson’s grand plans for the trilogy. She starred opposite her former ‘Armageddon’ co-star Ben Affleck in Kevin Smith’s ‘Jersey Girl.’ Tyler recalled this as a terrifying experience compared to ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ 

It took a few independent dramas for Tyler to feel comfortable stepping back into the realm of mainstream blockbusters. 

She even wrote a book with her grandmother.

During her break from acting, Liv Tyler began writing. In 2013, she co-wrote the book Modern Manners with her grandmother, Dorothea Johnson. The book is an elegant guide to 21st-century manners and etiquette for professionals who want to be confident and successful in the business and social arenas. 

As of 2023, ‘Modern Manners’ remains Tyler’s only book. 

She then transitioned to supporting roles on television.

Liv Tyler’s film appearances had decreased by the mid-2010s, but she continued acting by joining the cast of the HBO series ‘The Leftovers in 2014. The show ran for three seasons until 2017. Tyler played the role of Meg Abbott, the leader of a rebellious religious group that emerged after the sudden disappearance of 2% of the world’s population. Despite only appearing in around half of the show’s 28 episodes, Tyler’s performance was significant.

During her conversation with Gold Derby, Tyler revealed that her character became increasingly angry as the story progressed, a change that showrunner Damon Lindelof gradually implemented. 

Liv Tyler shot to global stardom playing Arwen in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ in her mid-20s. However, when she entered her 30s and became a mother in real life, she began to experience the effects of ageism in the industry. Unfortunately, this issue has plagued female actors in Hollywood for years and is still prevalent today. 

Liv Tyler has considered giving up acting as she is no longer offered the roles she used to receive. 

She began her career as a model at the age of 14 and returned to modeling in 2017 in a series of tasteful photos for Triumph of Europe’s Essence collection of lingerie. 

Liv Tyler left her lead role in Fox’s ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The entertainment industry shut down shortly after the show premiered in January 2020, putting many projects on hold. 

Tyler announced that she would not return to the show after reordering the second season because she didn’t want to be away from her London-based family.

Although she was once considered an A-list Hollywood star after her time in ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ Tyler’s career has since slowed down. However, this new opportunity will again allow her to rub shoulders with the elite. Liv Tyler is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by reprising her role as Betty Ross in the upcoming movie installment, ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ Tyler last played the role in 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk.’ She has not acted opposite Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner since he took over the role.
