Malia was born on July 4, 1998, and grew up in the public eye. Along with her mother, Michelle Obama, and younger sister, Sasha Obama, she often accompanied her father, Barack Obama, to speeches and dinners.

Before Barack became the first African American to win a presidential election in 2008, he served as a U.S. senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008, and Malia was already known as the daughter of a senator.

Malia received a dog when they moved to the White House.

Less than a year later, Malia Obama moved into the White House, leaving behind a life of relative normalcy. However, there was a bright spot. In his victory speech, Obama announced that his daughters would finally get a dog. 

The search for the perfect First Dog captivated America. Although the Obamas did not adopt a shelter pup, the late U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy gifted them a Portuguese water dog. In 2013, the Obamas welcomed a second Portuguese water dog named Sunny.

Malia has joined the Black Lives Matter protests.

Together with Sasha, Obama lives in an apartment in Los Angeles.

In an interview with British Vogue, their mother said that Malia and Sasha Obama “couldn’t be more different” at times. 

However, despite these differences, the couple is very close and has even gone to live together. The Daily Mail first spotted them in Los Angeles at the same time in January 2022, which sparked rumors that Sasha had moved to the West Coast to join her sister. An insider source hinted that Sasha may have even transferred from her course at the University of Michigan to the University of Southern California.

Donald Glover has praised Malia’s writing abilities. Following her work with Lena Dunham on the TV series Girls, Malia Obama was hired by talented actor and musician Donald Glover to write the script for his Beyoncé-inspired Amazon Prime series Swarm. The series, in which Dominic Fishback plays the role of an obsessed fan who goes on a killing spree, premieres in March 2023.

She likes to smoke and sweat.

Two habits of Malia Obama are opposite in their effects on the body: smoking and working out. In his memoir Promised Land, Barack Obama credits a judgmental look from young Malia with inspiring him to give up the unhealthy practice of taking smoking breaks while in the White House. And in 2016, Malia was photographed wearing a T-shirt that read “Smoking Kills.” This came weeks after she was spotted at Lollapalooza with a “suspicious cigarette,” as Page Six described it. In other words, it didn’t appear to have nicotine in it.

But when a paparazzo snapped some shots of Malia smoking a real cigarette (not the suspicious-looking kind) in October 2023, there was evidence that she had also picked up a healthier habit. The member of Generation Zer had a fancy Hydro Flask bottle under her arm, so at least she was trying to stay hydrated.
