According to Grayson Murray’s parents, he died Sunday as a result of suicide.
Grayson Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, died Saturday at 30.
” We spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son was gone,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement. ” “It’s surreal that we must recognize this not only to ourselves but to the world. It’s a nightmare.”
Murray has previously spoken openly about struggling with depression and alcoholism, and his career has been on the upswing recently.
After winning the Sony Open in January, Murray said he has been alcohol-free for eight months.
They got engaged to Christiana Ritchie and live together in Florida.
” We have so many unanswered questions,” Eric and Terry Murray said. ” But there is one.
” Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. We loved him, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, his extended family, his friends, his playmates, and – it seems – many of you who are reading this. He was loved, and he will be missed.”
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Murray withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday and died a day later.
PGA Tour chief Jay Monahan asked Murray’s family if they wanted to suspend the tournament, but Murray’s family wanted it to continue.
” The statement said, “We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire golf world for their support.” “Although Grayson took his own life, we know that he now rests in peace.”
” We ask that you respect our privacy while we experience this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson’s memory by showing kindness to one another. Since this has become his legacy, we can’t ask for anything else.”
After winning the Sony Open in January, Murray talked about life being “so good” for him.
” I wouldn’t trade anything,” he said at the time. I have a beautiful bride, beautiful parents, and beautiful nephews, brothers, and sisters.
” Every single person in my life right now who is close to me and has gone through hardships with me is all a team effort. But they are all part of the process.”
