Sometimes the most surprising friendships arise where you least expect them. A story set at the Folsom Zoo vividly illustrates how friendship knows no bounds.
One day, zoo staff noticed an unusual visitor in the enclosure of an elderly brown bear named Sequoia. The small stray cat had settled comfortably into the enclosure of the enormous animal, weighing approximately 250 kilograms, as if he’d always lived there.
The cat, who was no longer young, had long been searching for a place where he could regularly find food. He was attracted by the fact that keepers often left food for the bear in the enclosure. It soon became clear that the new visitor was coming daily. So, the staff began leaving cat food specifically for him.
Surprisingly, Sequoia didn’t mind this new companion at all. In fact, over time, the cat became a permanent resident of the enclosure and was named Little Bear. Since then, this unusual pair has attracted as much attention from visitors as the zoo’s other animals. Although the bear and cat don’t spend much time together, they are often close and seem quite content with their companionship.
Both animals are already elderly and prefer a quiet lifestyle. They enjoy relaxing in the shade, spending time in the sun, and avoiding unnecessary fuss.
Some visitors admire this unusual friendship with delight, while others worry about the cat’s safety. Many admit that they initially believed the bear might harm him. However, time has proven otherwise.
Zoo staff notes that Little Bear feels confident and comfortable. Perhaps years of living outdoors have taught him to survive in a variety of situations, and Sequoia appreciates his peaceful nature.
Regardless, the animals have developed a rare rapport. Today, they peacefully share the same space and seem quite content with each other’s company. This touching story reminds us that true friendship can arise even between those whom nature would never have thought would be brought together.
