Only the outer armored skin of a young nodosaur was preserved before the researchers. According to experts, the animal was caught in the epicenter of a powerful volcanic eruption. The high temperature destroyed the soft tissue almost instantly, but the strong bony plates of the skin withstood the impact. After completing his research, Dave returned to his usual work and received a substantial reward for discovering the unique object.
