Joe Atkins had known Largemire Lake in rural Louisiana his entire life. To him, it was a peaceful spot where he went fishing almost every morning. But one day, he noticed strange water movement in the middle of the lake—a small circle slowly spinning, even though the rest of the surface remained perfectly still.

At first, Joe assumed it was just an underwater spring. However, the mysterious circle didn’t go away. In fact, it became more pronounced with each passing week.

He began photographing the lake and soon discovered something alarming. A vortex was gradually forming in the center of the swirl. Leaves and branches that had previously floated calmly on the surface were now being pulled under.

After a heavy downpour, Joe witnessed a particularly frightening scene. A large branch drifted toward the swirling water, spun around a few times, and literally vanished beneath the surface. Within seconds, not a trace of it remained.

But the true horror became apparent near the old wooden pier. A mark on the pilings showed the previous water level; despite the prolonged rains, the lake wasn’t filling up. It was rapidly losing water.

Joe shared the photos with local authorities. Specialists equipped with sonar and a team of divers were sent to the site. An examination of the lakebed revealed a massive depression that kept growing.

An experienced diver, Mark Reed, attempted to inspect the edge of the depression with his partner. Underwater visibility was near zero. In the beams of their flashlights, they saw a layer of silt constantly shifting along the bottom. All the trails led toward a huge, dark fissure.

Suddenly, the ground directly in front of Mark began to give way. A massive slab of the lakebed cracked and collapsed into the black void. Almost immediately, a new fissure opened up right next to the divers. Mark realized that staying there was deadly dangerous.

After surfacing, he immediately ordered all boats removed from the lake.

Following the evacuation, specialists sent a remote-controlled submersible down. The camera revealed the cause of the mysterious whirlpool: the lakebed was literally collapsing into a massive underground cavity.

A review of old archives yielded an even more alarming explanation. Salt mines had operated in the area decades earlier, leaving behind a vast network of abandoned tunnels and huge caverns.

Over time, water had seeped into the mines and begun dissolving the salt pillars that supported the ceilings. The underground voids gradually expanded until the surface above them began to give way.

The greatest danger was that the tunnels ran not only beneath the lake but also directly under the shoreline—practically beneath the very pier where Joe had been fishing.

Soon, the ground near the pier’s entrance began to crack. A deafening roar erupted; the wooden structure collapsed and vanished into the murky water, taking the boat with it. A section of the shoreline followed suit.

Ultimately, they had to close off a vast stretch of the waterfront. The lake was changed forever.

Now, Joe views it only from a safe distance. He still keeps that first photo on his phone—a small, harmless-looking whirlpool amidst the calm water.

At the time, he had no idea he was looking right at the beginning of a massive sinkhole.
