It all started with a soft thud on the wooden steps of the porch.
Sarah barely noticed when her dog, Cooper, ran out of the forest behind the house and deposited a heavy black stone at her feet. It was covered in dried river silt and smelled of damp earth. Sarah petted the dog, tossed the find aside, and returned to the house.
But the next day, Cooper brought another stone. Then several more.
A couple of weeks later, a whole pile of dark finds had accumulated near the kitchen door. At first, Sarah’s husband, Tom, only laughed at his pet’s strange habit. However, one day he tried to push one of the stones away with his foot—and was unable to do so.
The stone turned out to be incredibly heavy. It felt more like a piece of metal, covered in a thick layer of dried mud.
Tom decided to clean it. He took a wire brush and began scrubbing the mud under running water. After a few minutes, an unusual pattern emerged on the surface: deep parallel grooves, like the tracks of a huge tire.
This was no ordinary stone at all.
Before them lay a perfectly preserved tooth of a prehistoric mammoth.
The next day, Tom decided to check the rest of Cooper’s finds. He carefully washed each piece. Then, at the bottom of the pile, he discovered an object that looked completely different.
After cleaning, it revealed a dark metallic surface with characteristic indentations and a fused crust.
Tom suspected it might be a meteorite fragment.
The man took both finds to the geology department of the local university. The professor barely glanced at them before becoming intrigued.
It turned out the dog had stumbled upon more than just a few unusual stones.
A recent collapse of the bank of an old stream had disturbed the soil layer in the forest. It was there that Cooper discovered a site where the remains of ancient animals might have been found. And nearby, a fragment of a rare iron meteorite was likely found.
Scientists hypothesized that a whole cluster of prehistoric bones and teeth might be hidden underground. The piece of cosmic material itself was already of some value, and a possible follow-up to the discovery could be much more significant.
When Tom and Sarah returned home that evening, Cooper was sitting on the porch, calmly wagging his tail.
Next to him lay two more heavy, dirt-covered stones.
It seemed the dog had discoveries in store for the day.
