Police in Canada have apprehended a woman in connection with an alleged online threat targeting individuals of Yoruba and Edo descent.
The incident, which was reported to Canadian authorities by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), is currently under investigation as a suspected hate-motivated offense.
As detailed in police reports, the incident is said to have commenced on or around August 25, when the suspect is alleged to have posted threatening content online.
According to law enforcement officials, a call regarding the threatening incident was received on August 28, prompting the swift initiation of an investigation.
On Sunday, September 1, 2024, Amaka Sonnberger, a 46-year-old woman, was apprehended by police in connection with the online threats.
Sonnberger has been charged with uttering threats, a grave infraction under Canadian legislation. She is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Monday, facing the charges against her.
The Toronto Police Service has confirmed that the incident is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offense.
Should she be convicted, Sonnberger could face significant legal consequences.
