The ocean off the coast of New Zealand seemed perfectly calm that day. Rob, an experienced lifeguard, was swimming with his daughter Nixie and two friends just a hundred meters from shore. For such experienced swimmers, that distance posed no danger.

But suddenly, everything changed.

Dolphins appeared from the depths. At first, the encounter seemed amazing—even pleasant. However, the animals soon began to behave strangely. They started circling the group rapidly, gradually tightening the ring. The dolphins slapped the water sharply with their tails and prevented the swimmers from moving away.

Rob tried to head toward the shore to get his daughter out of the circle. But two large dolphins instantly blocked his path, forcing him back to the others.

Finally, the massive shadow began to recede. The shark vanished into the ocean’s dark depths.

Only then did the dolphins break formation. The ring dissolved, and the animals cleared a path for the people to reach the shore.

When Rob and the others made it onto the sand, Nixie still didn’t realize how close the danger had been. Only once they were ashore did her father tell her the truth.

All that time, one of the ocean’s most dangerous predators had been right beneath them.
