Every morning, a stray dog would appear near a small student diner. He’d carry a piece of paper in his mouth and patiently wait his turn. For most, it seemed like a cute joke, but for the owner, Pedro, this habit became a special part of his life.

It was here a year ago that a small, frightened dog appeared—skinny, quiet, and cautious. He didn’t come close, didn’t ask for food, but lay nearby, watching. Pedro ignored it for a long time, until one day, something unusual happened.

The dog, later named Lola, approached the counter and placed a green leaf in front of him. He looked him straight in the eye, as if expecting an exchange. Pedro was initially confused, but then realized: the animal was mimicking what he saw—people were paying with leaf-shaped pieces of paper.

From that day on, a peculiar ritual developed between them. Every day, at precisely 11:00 AM, Lola would bring a new leaf and receive sausages in return. Over time, Lola became a true star. Her drawings adorned bags and T-shirts, and the establishment itself grew even more popular. For Pedro, she wasn’t an advertisement, but a friend.

He even prepared a place for her under a tree: a warm bed, a blanket, and toys.

This continued until one day when Lola didn’t show up.

At first, Pedro didn’t pay any attention—it happens. But when she didn’t show up the next day, his anxiety began to grow.

The students decided to help. They created missing-person posters and posted them throughout the premises. Everyone waited for news, but days passed without a trace.

A week later, Pedro received a message: a dog had allegedly been hit nearby. His heart sank.

But it turned out it was a different animal.

That evening, returning to the empty establishment, Pedro suddenly remembered a detail: the leaves Lola brought were always the same. So she had received him there.

He found an old leaf, identified its species, and realized where such a tree could grow—on the old lawn near the library. He headed there without wasting any time.

At first, there was silence. Only the wind and the rustling of branches. He was almost in despair when he suddenly heard a faint bark.

Pedro rushed toward the sound, parted the bushes, and froze.

There was Lola.

She lay exhausted, but alive. Two small puppies huddled next to her.

Everything became clear – she had disappeared because she had given birth and was hiding the puppies.

Pedro carefully picked her up and tucked the puppies under his jacket to keep them warm. Without wasting any time, he went to the vet.

Fortunately, it wasn’t that bad: Lola was weak, and the puppies were healthy.

After that, Pedro had no more doubts. He built a small house for them near his house and took Lola under his protection for good.

Now she rides to work with him every day, sticking her head out the window. She’s still a student favorite, but you don’t need a piece of paper to get a treat anymore.

Now she has a home.
