At 5:15 a.m., the drone rose above the dense vegetation and began scanning the Guatemalan jungle. A grid of bright LiDAR pulses appeared on the screen, gradually turning the impenetrable forest into a digital map.
Maya did not come here to search for the lost city. Her expedition was experiencing serious financial problems, and she was already seriously thinking about completing the project.
For three weeks, the team made their way through difficult conditions: constant dampness, snake bites, and stuffiness that made it difficult to breathe. According to official satellite maps, this area was considered virtually untouched territory – a real white spot in the jungle.
But everything changed when a new terrain model appeared on Maya’s computer.
LiDAR technology allows you to “see” through dense vegetation. Laser pulses pass between leaves and branches, are reflected from the surface of the earth, and create a detailed map of the landscape hidden under the forest.

As the data was processed, the usual green cover began to disappear.
Maya froze.
Beneath the forest was not a few random ruins, but a huge ancient city.
A perfectly flat road several kilometers long, crossing the jungle, appeared on the screen. Then came the outline of a giant pyramid, some one hundred feet high, defensive structures, and stepped agricultural terraces that could once have provided food for a huge population.
“Guys… you need to see this,” Maya said quietly.
The chief archaeologist approached the monitor. In his hand was a mug of coffee that had long cooled down. Seeing the map, he froze, and the mug fell to the ground.
Gradually, the team became aware of something much more alarming.
All this time, they had set up camp right above the ancient square.

What the researchers thought were ordinary hills turned out to be the remains of huge stone temples, completely hidden by vegetation and earth over many centuries.
But the strangest thing awaited them below.
Maya turned on an additional data layer and zoomed in on the central square. About forty feet below the surface, the instruments detected a large space. There was no obvious entrance visible on the surface.
However, inside the chamber, some signs did not fit into the picture of a long-abandoned city.
A chain of traces similar to fresh human prints was visible on the scanning layer. They crossed the layer of sediment and reached a massive stone door.
The most frightening thing was something else: the door seemed to be closed not from the outside, but from the inside.
If the LiDAR data was correct, there was more than just an ancient burial site under the researchers’ feet.
Someone could have visited there quite recently.
